The other two women are representative of two other important job segments filled by women during the war—welding and secretarial/clerical work. Posters such as these helped emphasize that very job that contributed to the war effort made that worker a “soldier without a gun”.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: By the end of World War II over six million women had become real-life Rosies as welders, riveters, truckers, munitions workers, mechanics and every other job needed to feed the war machine. Many of the women workers returned to homemaking after the war, but Rosie the Riveter had a second career. In the 1970s, Rosie the Riveter began an iconic career as the symbol for the emerging battle for women’s rights, particularly in the work force.
