A Red Cross nurse is shown next to a banner on whose other side is the classic figure Columbia, who is holding a pen. The banner reads: "Where Columbia sets her name, let every one of you follow her." The Red Cross held Christmas Fund Raising Drives.
Edwin Howard Blashfield did the artwork on the original lithograph on which this digital reprint is based. Blashfield was a well-known mural painter renowned for his brilliant use of color. His murals are on the dome of the Library of Congress, the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota state capitols.
