The five brothers were all aboard the “USS Juneau” (CL-52) during the Guadalcanal Campaign on November 13, 1942. During the operation, the ship took Japanese fire and sank, killing all five brothers. The brothers received their assignment on the “USS Juneau” prior to her commissioning. The commissioning ceremonies took place at the New York Navy Yard on February 14, 1942. At the ceremony, the five brothers posed in front of a ship hatch for this photograph. From left to right, the five heroic Sullivan brothers are Joseph, Francis, Albert, Madison and George. The original poster distribution encouraged civilians to participate in various home front causes.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Because of the brothers’ deaths, the U S Navy strongly discouraged members of the same family from serving aboard the same ship.
