Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a very remarkable World War II Navy combat photograph taken during the aftermath of Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.

A photographer of the United States Navy documented the horrific nature of the attack and one of the many incredible acts of heroism performed that day. In the photo, The U.S.S. West Virginia is the large ship engulfed in smoke and flames following the attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy. Along side of her, with utter disregard for their own personal safety, are sailors aboard several small boats. The larger vessel is the garbage lighter YG-17, aiming water hoses towards the West Virginia in a valiant attempt to battle the flames and contain the damage. Remember that there was still a high risk of additional explosions on the battleship or even further attacks. In a remarkable and poignant touch, an American Flag can be seen amidst the smoke from the West Virginia.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The U.S.S. West Virginia, while severely damaged, did survive and was returned to a continental United States port where she was completely modernized and returned to service in 1944.

CAPTION: Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 . The second and third lines read: Disregarding The Danger of Explosions, United States Sailors Man Their Boats At The Side Of The Burning U.S.S. West Virginia. Note the U.S. Flag Flying Amidst The Smoke.
