In spite of a combative personality, Cobb is recognized as one of baseball’s greatest players. He was the first player elected to the Hall of Fame winning a phenomenal 222 votes out of a possible 226. Cobb is captured in the prime of his magnificent career, a towering figure in baseball and life. Though he never won a world series, Cobb batted a .366 hit record and had over 4000 hits in his career.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The poster image is based on one of an astounding collection of 1911 baseball cards done by the American Tobacco Company. They were sent to all folks who sent in 10 coupons from Turkey Red Cigarettes or 25 coupons from either Old Mill or Fez Cigarettes. This series of cards—this was number nine of a total of seventy-six—was issued in 1911 and many of the images are among the best preserved of this era.

DESCRIPTION: Because this image is based on a chromolithograph of the era, the colors are deep and vibrant. The colors are bold and powerful creating an image of strength.
