The Poughkeepsie Regatta was a major collegiate rowing sports crew team competition. This rare photo captures the immensity of the Hudson River, emphasized by the base of the famed Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge behind it. The Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge was finished in 1888 after twenty years of construction. The bridge still stands today though it is only used as a walkway. A beautiful photograph, especially in the extra large size and on the rich parchment-like paper is sure to bring warm smiles to the face of rowing enthusiast or University of Wisconsin alumni.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: A stretch of the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, New York became the site of the Poughkeepsie Regatta. A unique, four-mile straightaway at this particular point of the Hudson made it a logical choice for a race that pushed the endurance of sports rowing crews. By contrast, modern crew competitions are much shorter. Starting in 1895, the races were held in the spring of each year, although there were some war years when no races were held. With such a long race, large crowds used the embankments to view the competition and within a few years as many as ten thousand spectators viewed the competition. The Intercollegiate Rowing Association established the race. Following World War II the competition was held at other locations.
