The crew is entering their shell for a practice in very choppy waters. This rare photo captures the immensity of the Hudson River and the physical strength need to participate in any Poughkeepsie Regatta of that era. A beautiful photograph, especially in this large format and on the rich parchment-like paper, sure to bring smiles to the face of any rowing enthusiast or Stanford alumni. Stanford was one of the first western teams to trek across the country to participate in the Poughkeepsie Regatta.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: A stretch of the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, New York became the site of the Poughkeepsie Regatta. A unique, four-mile straightaway at this particular point of the Hudson made it a logical choice for a race that pushed the endurance of sports rowing crews. By contrast, modern crew competitions are much shorter. Starting in 1895, the races were held in the spring of each year, although there were some war years when no races were held. With such a long race, large crowds used the embankments to view the competition and within a few years as many as ten thousand spectators viewed the competition. The Intercollegiate Rowing Association established the race. Following World War II the competition was held at other locations.
