Shoeless Joe Jackson Baseball Player Photo Chicago White Sox Black Sox Scandal Gift Photograph Sports Bar Decor

Product Description
This photo was taken on September 29, 1920, just a few weeks before a Chicago Grand Jury returned an indictment against him amidst the “Black Sox” baseball scandal. The ravages of the previous year are etched all over him. Joe is rarely shown in a clean uniform since he was a very physical player and all that diving and sliding is recorded on this, and most other, uniforms he wore. Of course Charles Comiskey is reputed to have been a tightwad of the first order and saved money by less frequent laundering of uniforms. “Shoeless Joe Jackson” was, as most people know, a baseball star of immense proportions and a tragic figure. He was one of baseball’s greatest hitters yet ended his professional career by being banned from baseball for life—the result of the infamous “Black Sox” scandal in which a group of players were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series. In spite of being acquitted in a court of law, Jackson and seven others were nonetheless banned by the new baseball commissioner, Kennesaw Mountain Landis.
During his career, Joe’s lifetime average of .356 bought him the number three rank of all-time batting averages behind Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby.
Regardless of your views on his guilt or innocence in the scandal, you cannot take away his performances as a hitter. Legend has it that Joe was dubbed “shoeless” after foot blisters forced him to take his shoes off during a game. After hitting a triple, Joe was standing on third when a fan behind him said: “You shoeless son-of-a-gun.” The name stuck.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: After his banishment, “Shoeless Joe” played minor league baseball and then worked a liquor store in South Carolina. In modern times, “Shoeless Joe” was the focus of the movie and book, “Field of Dreams”. He was also a central character in “Eight Men Out”, a movie about the “Black Sox” scandal. To this day, fans continue to press for his eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
