Product Description
The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, large new print of an amazing photo of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson when he played for the Cleveland Indians, just before he played with the Chicago White Sox.
“Shoeless Joe Jackson” was, as most people know, a baseball star of immense proportions with a tragic story. He was one of baseball’s greatest hitters yet ended his professional career by being banned from baseball for life—the result of the infamous “Black Sox” scandal in which a group of Chicago White Sox players were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series. In spite of being acquitted in a court of law, Jackson and seven other Chicago players were nonetheless banned by the new baseball commissioner, Kennesaw Mountain Landis. During his career, Joe’s lifetime average of .356 bought him the number three rank of all-time batting averages behind Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. This photo will make an ideal gift for any baseball fan.
In this particular photograph Jackson is shown in the uniform of the Cleveland Indians. The exact date of the photo is unknown. Jackson played for Cleveland from 1910 to 1915. When he came to Cleveland they were called “The Naps” and during his tenure the name was changed to the “Indians”. “Shoeless Joe” , as is the case in most photos of him, does not smile. He was in his mid-twenties in this photo. He was traded to Charles Comiskey and the Chicago White Sox, setting the stage for one of baseball’s most controversial incidents, ever. Regardless of your views on his guilt or innocence in the scandal, you cannot take away his performances as a hitter. Legend has it that Joe was dubbed “shoeless” after foot blisters forced him to take his shoes off during a game. After hitting a triple, Joe was standing on third when a fan behind him said: “You shoeless son-of-a-gun.” The name stuck.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: After his banishment, “Shoeless Joe” played minor league baseball and then worked a liquor store in South Carolina. In modern times, “Shoeless Joe” was the focus of the movie and book, “Field of Dreams”. He was also a central character in “Eight Men Out”, a movie about the “Black Sox” scandal. To this day, fans continue to press for his eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
