This bold, powerful poster features a Princeton College man in a dark navy blue turtleneck jersey sweater with a giant orange "P" emblazoned on the front. His gigantic hands appear slightly clenched. Behind his head is the word "Princeton. On the viewers bottom left is the word "guard" and printed next to it is the pictograph (the way Edward Penfield usually "signed" his works) of the artist, Edward Penfield.

ARTIST: Edward Penfield (1866-1925). In the late 1900s and early 20th Century, Edward Penfield was a huge influence on the artistic cultural landscape. As an illustrator and artist, Penfield was to have a productive and prolific career. Though his name is synonymous with Harper’s Weekly, where he produced multitudes of covers and illustrations, he also did posters and paintings that fetch incredible sums today. He once said, “We are a bit tired of the very serious nowadays, and a little frivolity is refreshing; and yet frivolity to be successful must be most thoroughly studied.” Combining a whimsical touch with a studied technique, he made an enduring contribution to the world of popular culture and the fine arts.
