The2FunAdGuyz offer a great new print of one of the more famous magazine covers ever done. Century Magazine had announced a contest for artists to submit cover art for its August 1896 cover. Twenty-two year old J. C. Leyendecker submitted the winning drawing and it appeared on the cover. The second place artist was Maxfield Parrish. This cover thrust Leyendecker into national attention and gave a tremendous boost to his career. The cover shows a woman holding picked flowers in her skirt. All around her are unpicked flowers, which seem to retain their red color, unlike the ones she has in her lap.
J. C. (Joseph Christian) Leyendecker was one of a small group of artist that helped make commercial art respectable. He completed his formal education at 15 and apprenticed himself to a printing and engraving house. He was soon doing illustrations for his employer's clients. He gained national attention when he won a cover contest for Century Magazine. That cover is available as a print in our store. His younger brother and he lived and studied in France. When he returned he was in demand as a magazine covers for Colliers and the Saturday Evening Post for whom he did over 300 covers. He is perhaps best remembered for the stylish drawings he did for the Arrow Shirt Company and the Leyendecker Arrow Man is recognized as one of the most memorable icon of the era. He died in 1951 after suffering a heat attack.
