The mother has her right arm around the waist of her daughter who is dressed in an elegant dress and bonnet, a rolling wheel and stick in her right hand. The mother’s left hand is stroking the long hair of her son. As was the custom among the upper classes during this era, the boy wears a dress. Overall, this placid scene of maternal love will warm the heart of every mother.

LITHOGRAPHY: Prior to the invention of lithography there was no way to reproduce prints in an economically viable way. That changed when a Bohemian discovered a way to print multiple copies of black and white drawings using a limestone and a series of chemical processes. Within a few decades the process was expanded to include color artwork. Using a special series of stone plates (minimum of four and up to 14 separate stones for a single print), color prints could be reproduced in large quantities. One of the reasons the results are so spectacular is that the pigments in the inks and ingredients to process the stones came from exotic locations around the world. The results—even more than a hundred years later—give us a unique, richly colored and very intense image. With the creation of lithography, the ability to produce commercial posters and reproduce great works of arts resulted in an expansion of the market for artwork.
