DESCRIPTION: The original photogravure print and this new print show the power of the technical aspects of printing photographs. Originally, a black and white portrait of a mother and daughter, under the hands of the photographer becomes a work of mystery and a celebration of femininity and motherhood. The title is Biblical and the painting in the background is the “Annunciation”. However, the harshness of the black and white image changes, becoming instead ethereal, almost out of focus. Printed as though we peer through a gossamer cloth, we want to know more. Instead, we wonder and surmise. Bringing her daughter into a room, the mother seems transformed into an angelic presence. The properly dressed young girl seems to become a young woman almost at this very moment. The mother protects, but does not control. The traditional becomes revolutionary; the obvious becomes sublime.

This placid scene of universal, maternal love and transformation will warm the heart of every mother and any other person who loves beauty.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Gertrude Kasebier was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1852. She was an energetic and curious child who seemed to love art. She trained as a painter. She soon became a photographer though her artistic training influenced her compositions. She experimented with a variety of print and process techniques. She was an associate of Alfred Stieglitz who first printed this image. She died in 1934 leaving an indelible mark on the art of photography.
