The poster commemorates one of the true heroine’s of the First World War, Edith Louisa Cavell, a British nurse who was executed by the Germans on October 12, 1915. In the poster a weeping angel is shown beside a portrait of Miss Cavell. The headline, in French, reads: Miss Cavell fusillée par les Allemands à Bruxelles le 12 Octobre 1915. Translated it reads: Miss Cavell executed by the Germans in Brussels Oct. 12, 1915.
Miss Edith Cavell went to Belgium in 1907 to work in a hospital. After the Germans occupied Belgium, Cavell helped hundreds of allied soldier escape to the Netherlands. After her arrest, she made no defense and was shot. On her last night before execution, Cavell told an English chaplain: “I realize that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone.” Those words are inscribed on her statue near Trafalgar Square in London. Mount Edith Cavell in the Canadian Rockies was named in her honour.
