HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: At the beginning of the twentieth century, American Advertising was discovering the power of brand names and brand advertising. Through ads in consumer magazines for women, American women were persuaded that there were products that defined their roles as both mother and woman. As American families gained affluence, increasingly women started buying brand names. Fairy Soap became successful at creating an image that caring mothers used their soap. As commercial printing was able to produce quality color images in magazines, businesses harnessed the effort of some of the greatest artists in the world to produce color illustrations such as this one. The result is priceless advertising art. All of this, of course, occurred before the word “fairy” became derogatory for gay male men. However, now the Fair Soap posters and ads have become collector’s items in the gay community and make an ideal gift for a gay man.

DESCRIPTION: The artwork on this piece is tremendous. In both the large, bolder illustration at the top and the smaller more delicate inset, appreciative little girls give their mothers admiring glances. The smaller inset shows a little girl coming from the bath into a waiting towel held by her mother. The copy extols the quick rinsing capabilities of the soap and its importance to skin. Tremendous illustration that will enhance the décor of a bathroom or any other room that requires a feminine touch.

CAPTION: Of course, at the very bottom of the poster is the Fairy slogan that asks the question: Have you a little Fairy in your home?

ARTIST: We have found no information on the identity of the artist though his talent is obvious in this piece.
